You know what I didn't know existed? Such an amazing ending to an absolutely amazing series. You all know how much it sucks when a series you loved has a huge let down of a finale, or is just utterly underwhelming. You wont find that here. This is an example of a very well wrapped up series. We jumped right back into the devastated world with Penryn. From the first sentence, the book moved forward at a fast, intense pace. There was never a dull moment. This book had it all. Epic, bloody, gory fighting. Humor. Swoon worthy romance. It all melted together so perfectly, creating an extraordinary finale.Just when you thought the characters couldn't get better, they do! We got to see so much more of Paige and Mom. Mom... she became one to be reckoned with! Paige, who you have this soft spot in your heart for, really steps into what has happened to her, and becomes a fierce little girl. I LOVED having her floating around so much. I still love Dee and Dum! OMG I love their banter and crazy ideas. They always add an element of humor to the story, which helps keep things from being bogged down in darkness. You know who else has a good sense of humor? RaffeHow do you improve perfection? Lets ask Susan Ee, because she just did it. He finally started giving in to his feelings, and it was beautiful. Raffe and Penryn together is just.... everything. Every second that they were apart was torture. I may have also experienced one of the most intense make-out sessions I have seen in a YA novel. WHEW! Though that may be just because I want them together so desperately that the smallest moments between them seem hugely intense. They sacrificed so much for each other, and faced heaven and hell to save each other and humanity. Raffe would clearly give anything for Penryn and she would have done the same for him. This is definitely one of my most beloved OTPs.Also, during this book, I experienced something I wasn't expecting. There was one scene, specifically, that made me cry (other scenes made me cry too, but this one is different). It wasn't about Raffe and Penryn or any of that. It was the scene with the ballet dancers. It broke my heart. It was one of those beautiful, sad, moments. It suddenly made me look at the series a whole, and how it looks at humanity. I think sometimes we underestimate humanity, because at this point, in the real world, people can be terrible. But every so often, they can come together in the face of disaster and remind us all that we can be better. I literally never think about these things, but here it was suddenly, just tearing me up inside. She portrayed humans in these books the way I feel like they would react in the event of a earth shattering tragedy in real life. Susan Ee made me think about life and humanity in her YA novels! S*** just got real. What has she done to me?!This final book is bittersweet. The series was phenomenal, and the end was so SO so well done, and I am extremely satisfied. BUT I would love to live more in Raffes arms... ummm, I mean... in the World After. So while I am sad to see it go, I am also content.I cannot wait for more from Susan Ee! The writing is gorgeous, the characters are so well formed, the world is so vividly built, the action is bloody and exciting.... she just hits all the necessary targets right on the head. If you haven't read this series yet, go run and do it immediately. I cannot speak highly enough about this, I am running out of words.
