So unfortunately, I'm a bit on the younger side of the spectrum, and had not heard of David Foster Wallace before watching this movie. I only knew about it because I'm a very big fan of Jason Segel and heard that he was pretty good in this, so I decided to give it a go. And wow, did I come away very please by this film.So for those that don't know the premise, it's about the magazine Rolling Stone sending out a reporter (played by Jesse Eisenberg) to interview David Foster Wallace (played by Jason Segel) on the last 5 days of his book tour for his new book release. When ensues is a very touching story about two men becoming close friends, and tackling very intense topics about life such as alcoholism, suicide, and what the meaning/purpose of life is. Something to keep in mind, this is a 100% dialogue driven film. There are no action scenes, no CGI, or high budget set pieces, just straight character development from an excellent script.Jason Segel turned in a fantastic performance. I am not sure how David Foster Wallace is in real life, so I'm not sure how 'realistic' Segel's performance was in regards to the author, but it was vastly different from the usual comedic roles that we see him in and it was very refreshing. As I mentioned before, I adore Jason Segel and all of his comedic roles, but it makes me very happy to see that he can also handle a dramatic role with ease. Jesse Eisenberg also turned in a solid performance as well. He's still his general "Jesse Eisenberg" character, but he was very competent in all of his scenes, and had great chemistry with Jason Segel. It's funny, because the chemistry between Eisenberg and Segel was definitely there, but it was a different type of chemistry. The best words that I could come up with to describe it was "very awkward yet somewhat charming". I thought that it was very authentic and believable how they interacted with each other, as well as just sharing general chemistry on screen in a movie.Parents: This is actually pretty mild for an R movie. There's some language (there are some F words, but it's not overwhelming), but honestly, that's pretty much it. There's no sex or nudity, no heavy drug usage, no violence, etc. Just language, and dealing with some heavy topics about life.I don't want to give too much away, because I think that's one of the reasons that I enjoyed this movie so much. Having essentially 0 knowledge of what was to come. As mentioned before, this is a dialogue driven film that is more artistic and trying to tell a story than trying to make money. If that's not your type of movie there's nothing wrong with that, just be sure that you're aware of it ^_^
